I am fascinated by flowers and also by the patterns found in iron railings. I wove these elements together in a patchwork pattern to create the original watercolor painting. I gave the original painting to my father and his wife as a house-warming gift when they bought a cottage on Little Chance Harbour in Nova Scotia. Below is the digital version I created in 2021 soon after the launch of Illustrator for iPad.

Before a personal computer came into my life, my artistic process consisted of grabbing a pen and doodling on any available paper, often a blank book that someone in my family gave me as a gift. When I wanted to paint, I went through the book and chose different drawings to incorporate into the scene. I drew these onto acid-free rag with pencil and then painted in with colors I mixed fromSakura watercolor paint tubes. I mixed in white gouache to eliminate the normally transparent look of watercolor paint. I created the drawings above the year before I made the painting. At the time, it was beyond my wildest dream that someday one would be able to reproduce and present one's own artwork via a computer and the internet. If someone had predicted that to me back then, I would have been very skeptical that they believed impossible magic could be real.

I used Broderbund Print Shop Deluxe to make these posters as a volunteer for the Northern Liberties Recreation Center. In 1999 Print Shop Deluxe and Printmaster were popular software for desktop publishing of greeting cards, work announcements, and other DIY graphic art projects. The software packages came loaded with CDs containing templates and images for use with Microsoft Windows 1999.
