Once I've created a vector drawing of my artwork, I can experiment with a lot of different possibilities.
Illustrator Artboard for Paths, 2023
Waiting is something in my life that really changed after I got my first iPhone and later, iPad. Any time I'm in a waiting room, sitting bedside in a hospital, or riding a bus stuck in traffic, the time goes by quickly because these devices contain an entire world of interactive books, music, games, files, and more. For this artwork, I was sitting at a table in a Toyota dealer service area waiting for my car to be serviced. I used my phone's personal hotspot to connect my iPad to cellular service so I could retrieve a scan of the original lino print from my Cloud files. I "placed" the scan into Illustrator for iPad and "traced" the artwork using the pencil, shape and Pathfinder tools. When I got home, I opened up my desktop Illustrator and added more artboards and experimented with more possibilities. I wouldn't have created this digital artwork if it weren't for that waiting time causing me to look for something fun to do to pass the time waiting. I suppose my younger self could have toted a box full of lino cutters, brayers, ink, paper, a jar of water and newsprint to the Toyota dealer to work on while waiting but I probably wouldn't have and I don't think they would have appreciated the mess.
